What is the early history of Kozhikode? 

Kozhikode, previously known as Calicut, has been a prominent trading hub since the 7th century. However, the early history of Kozhikode has yet to be fully known or documented. We know now that the area was under the Chera rule and became a port in the late 12 century. The Zamurins who followed the Cheras flourished the trade out of Kozhikode in the 13th and 14th centuries. When the world-renowned Muzirus port was destroyed, Kozhikode gained a lot in trade. Kozhikode port was used to export spices, textiles, and valuable stones to the middle east and the rest of the world. 

What is the colonial history of Kozhikode?

Kozhikode has a long history of colonial rule, with the Portuguese, Dutch, and British all living there at different times. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to come to Kozhikode via sea route. Vasco De Gama, the first European who arrived in India, circumventing Africa, reached here in 1498. But it was the  Dutch who managed to take complete control of the city in the middle of the 17th century.  Dutch power in India eventually dwindled, and the British took control of Kozhikode in the 18th century.

 

What is the cultural heritage of Kozhikode? 

The city is known for its unique art forms, such as the ritualistic dance style Theyyam and the traditional martial art Kalaripayattu. The city also has several temples and mosques, including the well-known Tali Temple and the Mishkal Mosque. In addition, Beyppore, a small port near Kozhikode, has been world renowned for manufacturing a special type of dhow called an “Uru,” or “Fat Boat” in English. Uru is a solid boat with a design from the past.

Pazhassi Rajah was a powerful ruler, an early freedom fighter, and an important figure in India’s fight for independence. He was born into the Kottayam Royal family in 1753, and at 21, he took over as the leader of the Kottayam dynasty. 
Pazhassi led many wars against the British East India Company. Pazhassi Rajah was among the first Indian rulers to fight against British rule. He fought against the company in the jungles of Wayanad in several guerrilla wars. His leadership made many people want to fight against the British, and he is revered as one of Kerala’s early freedom fighters.

Kozhikode is known for its tasty food, and you must try some traditional dishes there. Malabar Biriyani is one of these dishes. It is a popular rice dish with meat, spices, and saffron. Kozhikodan halwa is a favourite sweet that carries Kozhikode in its name. Try “Sulaimani” black tea when you go for a ramble on the beaches.

 The best time to visit Kozhikode is between October and March when the weather is cool and pleasant. But this is also the busiest time for tourists, so people should be ready for higher prices and deal with crowds.
